The Holy Spirit
By Luis M. Martínez
“I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Paraclete, one who is to dwell continually with you forever. It is the truth-giving Spirit…” On the day before he was to suffer, on the night of the Last Supper, Jesus spoke these words in revelation of the Third Person of the Trinity. It is no coincidence that, shortly following these words, Jesus then calls his disciples “friends.”
As Archbishop Luis M. Martínez eloquently explains: “The love of friendship is mutual. God loves us through the Holy Spirit; and that we may correspond to that infinite love with a love created, to be sure, but also supernatural and divine, the Holy Spirit when giving Himself to us pours into our souls the likeness of Himself, which is charity; and this can become so perfect that it can be said that God and we form one same love, one same spirit.”
In The Holy Spirit, Martínez offers an inspired and inspiring study of the Paraclete, “the soul’s delightful Guest,” his Gifts and their fruits, and his sanctification of souls.
Surely you know that your bodies are the shrines of the Holy Spirit, who dwells in you. And he is God’s gift to you… (1 Corinthians 6:19)
The true Director of souls, the intimate Master, the soul of the spiritual life, is the Holy Spirit. Without Him, there is no sanctity. (Luis M. Martínez)
Originally published in English in 1957, The Holy Spirit is a classic of Christian spirituality, a beautiful summary on the revelation and doctrine of the Third Person of
the Most Holy Trinity.
