The best of the best
BENE titles, like those in our ALLTA Collection, are printed as premium, hardbound editions. Into these books we pour the best of our talent, our treasure, and our desire to make books as we ourselves are made in the image of our Maker—which is to say, very good.
As with any Cluny book, BENE titles are made not only to be beautiful on the outside but also engaging on the inside—wrestling with reality, telling a story, communicating the truth in such a way that seeks to the discover the deep meaning of what it means to be human and en route to eternity.
What’s in the name
The BENE name is a tribute to the founder of our namesake and inspiration for workers worldwide: St. Benedict of Nursia. It is also, words-wise, a simple statement of how we want we publish and print: well (bene).
Making many books, we aim to strike a fine balance of quantity and quality. Little good it does, after all, to make many books if those selfsame books are poorly and frightfully made.
As anyone knows who has held and read a Cluny book, we strive for excellence in how the book is presented—its cover, its colors, its type, its weight, all the while recognizing a hard truth: Just as every man cannot be king, so every book cannot be that of Kells.
By Luis M. Martínez
“I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Paraclete, one who is to dwell continually with you forever. It is the truth-giving Spirit…” On the day before he was to suffer, on the night of the Last Supper, Jesus spoke these words in revelation of the Third Person of the Trinity. It is no coincidence that, shortly following these words, Jesus then calls his disciples “friends.”
As Archbishop Luis M. Martínez eloquently explains: “The love of friendship is mutual. God loves us through the Holy Spirit; and that we may correspond to that infinite love with a love created, to be sure, but also supernatural and divine, the Holy Spirit when giving Himself to us pours into our souls the likeness of Himself, which is charity; and this can become so perfect that it can be said that God and we form one same love, one same spirit.”
In The Holy Spirit, Martínez offers an inspired and inspiring study of the Paraclete, “the soul’s delightful Guest,” his Gifts and their fruits, and his sanctification of souls.
Surely you know that your bodies are the shrines of the Holy Spirit, who dwells in you. And he is God’s gift to you… (1 Corinthians 6:19)
The true Director of souls, the intimate Master, the soul of the spiritual life, is the Holy Spirit. Without Him, there is no sanctity. (Luis M. Martínez)
Originally published in English in 1957, The Holy Spirit is a classic of Christian spirituality, a beautiful summary on the revelation and doctrine of the Third Person of
the Most Holy Trinity.
Luis M. Martínez (1881–1956) was Archbishop of Mexico City and a distinguished spiritual author and theologian. In 1951, he was named the first official Primate of Mexico. In addition to The Holy Spirit, his works in English include Liturgical Preludes; Only Jesus; The Priest: Mystery of Love; and Secrets of the Interior Life—all available from Cluny.
