John Henry Newman, a saint and now Doctor of the Church, is a perpetual witness to Christ. Specifically, this long-suffering follower of God’s kindly light testifies to the truth that the Catholic Church is not merely a resting-place for certain temperaments; rather, in the words of Ronald Knox, it is “the resting-place of all minds, learned as well as simple, critical as well as enthusiastic; it has a welcome and a home for all.” Perhaps even more than Newman’s studied scholarly works, his sermons make this point, speaking to the soul simply and sincerely about the spiritual life and the things necessary to salvation. Published in 1956 as Faith and Prejudice and Other Unpublished Sermons (the first volume, then, of Newman’s Catholic sermons to appear in seventy years), The Grace of Faith adheres to its author’s own rule for preaching: to say “what religion demands, what faith teaches, what the Gospel promises.”

John Henry Newman (1801–1890) had a notable career at Oxford University and was an Anglican priest before becoming a Roman Catholic in 1845 and a Catholic priest in 1847. A prolific author and preacher, he also founded Oratory houses and served as rector of the Catholic University of Ireland. In 2019, he was canonized a saint of the Catholic Church.
