Meditations on Various Subjects
By Saint John Eudes
“Prayer is a joyous meeting, a holy communication, a divine conversation between God and the Christian.” (Saint John Eudes)
“The wonder of his age,” Saint John Eudes was a missionary, founder, and reformer; a tireless promoter of devotion to the Hearts of Jesus and Mary; and an exceptionally prolific author. Amidst all these achievements, he also kept the rule of his Heavenly King: sine intermissione orate, “pray without ceasing.” Moreover, he not only encouraged countless others to do likewise, but also composed a vast array of meditations to facilitate their prayers and sustain their spirits. First appearing in 1947, this edition of his Meditations includes over one hundred reflections on the mysteries of Jesus (arranged for daily use during the week); on humility; on birth and baptism; on the preparation for death; on the admirable life and holy heart of Mary; on the Sacred Heart of Jesus; and for special days of the year, including Good Friday, the Assumption of Mary, and Christmas Day.
Collected, introduced, and translated into English under the direction of Charles Lebrun, a priest of the Congregation of Jesus and Mary and devout student in his patron’s school of spirituality, this volume of Saint John Eudes’ Meditations on Various Subjects abounds with opportunities and means alike for fulfilling the Christian mission—the continuation of Christ’s own prayer for the salvation of souls and the coming of that Kingdom where “God will be all in all.”
Saint John Eudes (1601–1690) was a French Catholic priest and founder of two religious orders: the Sisters of Our Lady of Charity of the Refuge and the Congregation of Jesus and Mary. Preacher of countless parish retreats, advocate for seminarian formation, and dedicated confessor, he made the supreme achievement of his exemplary priesthood the promotion of the devotions to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary. In 1925, Pope Pius XI canonized him a saint of the Catholic Church.
