Frank Capra (1897–1991) was an Italian-American film director, producer and writer. Capra was nominated six times for the Academy Award for Best Director, winning thrice (It Happened One Night, in 1934; Mr. Deeds Goes to Town, in 1936; and You Can’t Take It with You, in 1938). A Roman Catholic, Capra placed charity and human freedom and dignity at the heart of his craft. In 2006, The American Film Institute recognized his It’s a Wonderful Life as the eleventh best film in American cinema.
