It is a tale of Robin Hood,
Which I to you will tell,
Which being rightly understood,
I know will please you well. (A True Tale of Robin Hood - 1632)

In merry England in the time of old, there lived within the green glades of Sherwood Forest a famous outlaw whose name was Robin Hood.

Fallen afoul of the law, as it was wielded in those days by men of darkened minds and corrupted wills, Robin and his band vowed to despoil in turn those who had oppressed their neighbors with unjust taxes and heavy burdens—those barons, abbots, and knights who had degraded their honor in self-seeking instead of honest service.

From these, and from these only, Robin Hood and his brave fellows would take back what had been seized from the poor. To the poor themselves they would lend a helping hand, returning what had been unjustly taken and rewarding them as they could with the good things and bright coins that came into their own hands.

In this bold and bracing telling, the merry adventures of Robin Hood and his band come to life, including the befriending of Robin and Little John; the bouts between Robin and the cruel Sheriff of Nottingham; the rescue of good Will Stutely; the arrival of merry Friar Tuck; and the mischief of Robin and Little John, Will Scarlet and Alan a Dale, as they woo fair love and serve their good King, Richard of the Lion’s Heart, in valorous fealty.

An instant success upon its publication in 1883, The Merry Adventures of Robin Hood firmly fixed its Lincoln green-clad hero, his brave companions, and their daring deeds in the hearts of readers both young and old. Brimming with the life of Pyle’s original and clever illustrations, this new edition promises that the memory of the cheerful robber of the rich and generous protector of the poor will not fade away.
