Our Lady of Wisdom

By Maurice Zundel

Creation is a mirror of the Creator. In the words of St. Paul: “From the foundations of the world men have caught sight of God’s invisible nature, his eternal power and his divineness, as they are known through his creatures.”

The world, as Maurice Zundel writes, can thus be seen as a parable: “Every reality looks towards God; every one of our needs is the repercussion of our one single need for God who is the one thing necessary.” The sanctification of one’s soul, the life of virtue, the Christian pilgrimage: these depend on an acknowledgment of this fundamental fact, an acceptance of divine poverty, and a wholehearted attendance upon the promptings of the Spirit of God. The Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of God, is the epitome of this self-emptying, self-giving ordination to the life and light of the Divine Word.

Mary is not Wisdom but the Seat of Wisdom; she is not Life but the enclosed garden in which the river of Life springs up. In her, as in the Church, it is always Jesus we meet. (Maurice Zundel)

Translated into English by F. J. Sheed in 1940, Our Lady of Wisdom is a beautiful and instructive meditation on Mary as the exemplar and mirror of sanctity, the Seat of Wisdom par excellence, mediating God’s grace to the faithful and showing unto them the blessed fruit of her womb, in whom are all the treasures of wisdom, knowledge, and love.
