By Robert Hugh Benson

The Light Invisible, Robert Hugh Benson’s first novel of the sixteen total he wrote in his lifetime, is an exploration of miracles and mysticism in the natural world. Told through a series of connected anecdotes by an elderly priest, the novel purports to display what Benson called a “a faculty common to all who posses a coherent spiritual life.” This faculty is to discern divine truths in each distinct element of the manifold variety of creation, guided at all times by the ultimate wisdom of Revelation. The Light Invisible shows Benson at the earliest stage of his literary career, charting his unique path through the challenges of writing markedly Christian stories.

Robert Hugh Benson (1871–1914) the son of the Anglican Archbishop of Canterbury, was a convert to Roman Catholicism and was ordained a priest in 1904. A dynamic preacher and author, Benson wrote dozens of novels as well as numerous short stories, plays, essays, and spiritual texts.
