By Alban Goodier, S.J.

The passion of Christ accomplished the divine plan of redemption for all mankind. By the unique and definitive sacrifice of his suffering and death, Jesus established “the source of eternal salvation,” taking away the sins of the world and restoring fallen humanity to communion with God in the reconciliation of his blood. In light of this, the Passion narratives found in the Gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John together represent the ultimate story—telling of the events upon which hung the eternal destiny of every man, woman, and child who has walked or ever will walk the earth.

He was wounded for our iniquities, he was bruised for our sins: the chastisement of our peace was upon him, and by his bruises we are healed. (Book of Isaiah)

First published in 1918, Archbishop Goodier’s The Crown of Sorrow fittingly begins with a harmony of the Four Evangelists’ Passion accounts, from the Agony in the Garden to the Entombment, the different scenes and sayings seamlessly woven together, followed by a series of fifty-two meditations on the various aspects of the Passion. Pithy and profound, these meditations are direct and earnest examinations of the mystery of Christ’s suffering and death, unburdened by anything cumbersome or cloying, which clearly and helpfully apply to the Christian life, purchased so dearly by the Man of Sorrows.
