The Admirable Heart of Mary
By St. John Eudes | Translated by Charles di Targiani and Ruth Hauser
The Admirable Heart of Mary was the first book written on the devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary. Saint John Eudes, whom Pope Pius XI called “a wonderful herald of eternal truths,” was the leading proponent in the seventeenth century of the devotion to the Hearts of Jesus and Mary; he wrote the propers to the Mass and Divine Office for the devotion as well as composing litanies, salutations, and consecrations for its practice. In The Admirable Heart of Mary, Eudes develops a spiritual treatise on the nature, object, and expressions of the devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary. In the saint’s inspired fashion, he makes the sublime truths of revelation and tradition simple, familiar, and practical.
To speak and write worthily of the holy Heart of God’s own Mother one would need a heart of fire. (Saint John Eudes)
Translated from the French by Charles di Targiani and Ruth Hauser and published as the lead volume in the Selected Works of Saint John Eudes in 1948, The Admirable Heart of Mary is a classic work of Catholic spiritual literature, in which he lays—in the words of Pope Benedict XVI—“a path of holiness…founded on steadfast trust in the love that God had revealed to humanity in the priestly Heart of Christ and in the maternal Heart of Mary.”
Saint John Eudes (1601–1690) was a French Catholic priest and founder of two religious orders: the Sisters of Our Lady of Charity of the Refuge and the Congregation of Jesus and Mary. Preacher of countless parish retreats, advocate for seminarian formation, and dedicated confessor, he made the supreme achievement of his exemplary priesthood the promotion of the devotions to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary. In 1925, Pope Pius XI canonized him a saint of the Catholic Church.
