By Leo L. Clarke

Are we putting the “stupid” in the slogan, “It’s the economy, stupid”? Man and the Economy articulates the basic points of capitalist economics and Catholic social teaching and addresses how Catholics can bring the teachings of the Faith to bear in the economic decisions of daily life. Clarke wields practical knowledge and philosophical acumen in equal supply as he encourages a robust appreciation of the validity of the Catholic Church’s social doctrine as a “third way” of economic life, capable of cooperating with capitalist economies, but not enslaved to their assumptions and values. An eminently readable and engaging text, Man and the Economy will prove an invaluable guide for Catholics seeking to engage in the public square and in personal and professional economic activity.

Catholics attempting to reconcile principles of Economics with the moral teaching of CST must appreciate the advantages and proper uses of both science and ideology, which together constitute Economics as the term is taught and generally used in the public square.” –Leo L. Clarke

Leo L. Clarke has practiced business law in six jurisdictions, taught at five law schools, and been a business executive with public companies and startups. He has also lectured and written on the application of Catholic social teaching to economic affairs and on other topics ranging from cyberwar to financial law. He holds a B.A. in Economics, with honors, from Stanford University, and a J.D., with honors, from UCLA Law School. He lives in Massachusetts with his wife and two youngest daughters.
