Light on the Mountain
By John S. Kennedy
“Come near, my children. Do be not afraid. I am here to tell something of great importance.” (Our Lady of LaSalette)
In the year 1846, on the nineteenth day of the golden month of September, in the green fields of France, there appeared to two young shepherds a woman, wreathed in brilliant light. Beautiful as she was, yet the woman wept. At her invitation, young Mélanie and Maximin drew near and received the message of the Mother of God—now known also as Our Lady of LaSalette. In Light on the Mountain, Father John S. Kennedy tells this miraculous story. Relaying all the dramatic and inspiring qualities of the events, his account is a vivid presentation of the apparition; of the astonishment of Mélanie and Maximin at the message and their attempts to share it; of the many attempts of skeptics to prosecute and prove the story false; of the sanctifying effects brought upon the children and their community by this heavenly visitation; and of the formal recognition by the Church, after scrutiny of all the evidence, that the Woman who appeared, weeping amidst her glory, on that September day in 1846, was in truth Our Lady.
Originally published in 1953, Light on the Mountain was the first comprehensive account, in English, of the miraculous events which occurred at LaSalette. Reverently treated and told in rich detail, Light on the Mountain is a profound record of the grace and mercy of God, which has been visited upon fallen humanity time and again by his compassionate Mother.
