Complete Writings on America
By Edmund Burke
Complete Writings on America includes the most important speeches and writings on America by the eighteenth century philosopher and statesman, Edmund Burke. Burke was a well-known orator who enjoyed a decades-long public career, whose speeches were republished many times in America during the 19th century, and whose works on political and philosophical issues continue to be highly influential today. This new edition provides a full account of Burke’s thoughts and actions in regard to the colonial crisis in American history and, more generally, the development of constitutionalism. It features a new Introduction by Bruce P. Frohnen, Ph.D., a widely acclaimed scholar on constitutionalism and jurisprudence.
Edmund Burke (1729–1797) was for several decades a member of the British Parliament, where he worked to defend constitutional free government against corruption, revolution, and the centralization of power. A famed orator and political thinker, his Reflections on the Revolution in France is credited with solidifying opposition to the anti-religious radicalism of the French Revolution and founding modern conservatism.
Bruce P. Frohnen is the author of three books, including (with George W. Carey) Constitutional Morality and the Rise of Quasi-Law (Harvard University Press, 2016). He also has edited numerous volumes and published over 100 articles and essays in journals including the Harvard Journal of Law & Public Policy and the American Journal of Jurisprudence. He currently serves as Professor of Law at Ohio Northern University College of Law.
