Josef Pieper

May 4, 1904–November 6, 1997

Josef Pieper was a prominent German Catholic philosopher, professor, and author. Along with Étienne Gilson, Jacques Maritain, and A.G. Sertillanges, he was instrumental in the twentieth-century revival of Thomistic scholarship.

Among his many works are the outstanding Leisure, the Basis of Culture and Faith, Hope, Love as well as—from CLUNY—What Catholics Believe, Hope and History, and The Weight of Belief.
